As part of its engagement with the wider technology community in South Carolina, the Conway Innovation Center (CIC) was a sponsor of the “Startup Weekend” held in Charleston, South Carolina from September 12th to 14th. Startup Weekend, run by a national organization (http://www.startupweekend.org), are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if their startup ideas are viable.
A group of Coastal Carolina University (CCU) students attended the event and will bring back what they learned to the Conway Innovation Center in a community presentation to be held at the Center at 1119 Third Avenue, Conway, in mid-October. “The experiences these students had at this event fit perfectly with our College’s approach toward hands-on learning”, said CCU College of Science Dean, Dr. Michael Roberts. Roberts is also President of the 5thT Innovation Group – the non-profit organization that operates the CIC. Kevin Shea, CIC and 5thT Executive Director, added: “the sponsorship of this event by our organization, will help build our connections within the state as we seek to make Conway a center for technological innovation”. The 5thT Innovation Group hopes to bring a Startup Weekend event to the Conway Innovation Center in the Spring of 2015.
The purpose of the 5thT Innovation Group is to initiate, grow and develop business activity in a collaborative partnership between Coastal Carolina University and its public and private sponsors. The Conway Innovation Center, through the Clemson University Technology Villages program, is connected to technology-oriented innovation centers across South Carolina, creating a network of local entrepreneurs within an interconnected support system.
